My Grandmother's Smile I couldn't believe when I saw this picture
I was sort of stunned when I saw this picture for the first time. I have seen my grandmother in photographs for years…just in this exact pose.
This is my grandmother’s bedroom. I am sitting in the spot that was once the place of a mahogany ches. On top of that chest was a picture of my graduation from high school and another picture of my graduation from college. I was the first in my family to go to college. It was "our" accomplishment.
After my grandfather’s death my grandmother and I started getting closer. I would call and ask if it was OK for me to come spend the night with her. She would say, "Come on baby and bring a switch."
After my grandfather’s death my grandmother got her driver’s license for the first time. She chose not to be a victim after he passed. She chose to reach out to her family, friends and community. Her contributions to others were taking on a new life for her. She did this boldly. I can’t imagine never having a driver’s license? I can’t imagine the courage it must have taken her to get her first driver’s license.
